Pronunciation Guide

As students, we're approaching Th'owxiya: The Hungry Feast Dish by really trying to understand the cultural significance behind the story and its characters. We're learning to respect the Indigenous roots of the play and the lessons it teaches about balance, community, and nature. Our main goal is to put on a performance that not only entertains but also gets people thinking about the importance of Indigenous stories and why it’s so valuable to share them.​
 

As part of our commitment to authentically representing Th'owxiya: The Hungry Feast Dish, we’ve dedicated time to learning the correct pronunciation of Halq'enéylem words. The website FirstVoices has been a valuable resource, providing us with recordings from Elders who generously shared their voices to guide us in speaking these words accurately. We’ve used these recordings to practice, and now we are proud to incorporate our own voices on the site to share the language in a way that reflects our personal connection to the story. This process has deepened our respect for the language and culture, and we’re excited to contribute to the preservation of these words through our performance.
